The Paton-Churdan basketball teams hosted the Adair-Casey Bombers for Saturday basketball and came away with one win and one loss.
The girls lost the first game of the twin bill 63-35. A-C was ahead 14-9 after one quarter and used hot shooting in the second quarter to build a 35-18 lead at the end of the first half. The Rockets were stymied in the third quarter, scoring only three points, while the Bombers put up another 18 points. The Bombers put in reserves in the fourth quarter and the Rockets were able to score 14 points to the Bombers’ six. Final score was 63-35
Carleigh Paup scored 14 points, Kasey Lane scored eight, Sydney Koch scored seven, Jenna Beyers scored three, Grace Geisler scored two and Reilly Niles scored one.
Lane led the team in rebounds with 10 and Beyers had five. Koch had five steals and four rebounds. Paup had three steals, three assists and two rebounds.
“We ran into a very good basketball team tonight,” coach Chris Petersen said. “Their execution and defensive intensity was more than we were ready for. They forced us into 28 turnovers, which is far too many to be competitive with. The credit tonight goes to Adair-Casey as they are a well-disciplined and well-coached team.
The loss put the girls at 1-2 overall and in the Rolling Valley Activities Conference.
The boys avenged the girls’ thumping with a thumping of their own, beating the Bombers 51-22. The Bombers scored just seven points in the first quarter and added only five in the second quarter. The score at halftime was 31-12, with that including three 3-point baskets by Jake Berns.
The second half wasn’t much different. The Bombers put up two points in the first minute, but didn’t score for the next eight minutes. The score at the end of the third quarter was 42-14. Rocket coach Chris Stimson played the reserves in the fourth quarter, with Kourtlin Thacker, Clayton Smith, Blake Delaney and Eric Thompson all seeing playing time.
For the game, Noah Juergensen played 21 points, Berns scored 15, Joe Towers scored eight, Chase Juergensen scored three, and Trevor Bundt and Joe Thede scored two each.
Noah Juergensen had eight rebounds and Chase Juergensen, Berns, Charlie Minnehan and Towers had five each. Towers had five assists and six steals.
The boys are 3-0 overall and in the Rolling Valley.
